Bali Field Notes 1 - 25/12/2025
In deciding to do conservation work with Waves, I realized I actually know very little about the workings of NGOs and conservation efforts in the world.
I'm currently in Bali, Indonesia, and wanted to take some time to visit different NGOs working on different conservation-related efforts to see what actually makes sense for me to get involved in.
Where can Waves make the biggest impact?
What should I be spending my time on?
These field notes will be short reports posted once or twice a week about my endeavors in visiting and trying to understand the different organizations doing conservation work in Bali and the ways in which they operate.
There are many marine conservation efforts that are working on coral reef restoration, sea turtle rescue, plastic collection, etc. on the island.
I've also heard of an interesting project trying to save the fireflies in Bali. That seems like an interesting one I'd love to learn more about.
Even the more touristic places like the Bali Butterfly Park might teach me more about the insects that live here and their part in the ecosystem.
And I've also heard about mangroves being planted all along the coast.
Recent events in Sumatra have also shown the importance of reforestation, as to stop landslides from happening.
All of these would be interesting parts of the puzzle that is conservation that I'd love to learn more about and share with all of you.
I'll be starting my field notes in Bali, since I'm based here. Then moving on to some other islands to try and showcase some of the efforts there.
Every month I'll also be posting a more in-depth report for members on the actual efforts that Waves is involved in.
Follow along for updates on conservation efforts in Bali and me trying to figure out how my time, and Waves' is best spent helping!
